Bone marrow is the spongy center located inside the bones, where blood cells are made.
Blood cells begin as stem cells in the bone marrow. Stem cells grow and mature into different types of cells: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body. When the number of red blood cells is below normal, a condition called anemia may develop. Patients with anemia may feel weak, tired or short of breath.
